Re: Eastern Ottawa and Area Summer Get Together Aug 12th

Thanks to everyone that made it out. It was good to see you all again. I hope you all enjoyed the day and that you all learned a thing or two. I know I always do. Farmgal is indeed a wealth of knowledge. Rabbits 101, protein from thin air and the cheese making (and tasting - my favorite part) were a...

Re: Eastern Ottawa and Area Summer Get Together Aug 12th

So folks the meet is only a month away and we are working tirelessly on getting things ready. We have had to make a few changes to the line-up in order to fit everything in. The Komboucha presentation is off the agenda to make room for Rabbits 101. However, if participants are interested scoobies (i...

Re: Food Dehydrators

Thanks for the link foxglove. I think it depends on how much you expect to use your dehydrator that will determine which model to buy. If you are just using it once in a while and not for vast amounts of products you would be better off with the less expensive models. Nesco and salton both make good...

Re: Spring Ottawa and Area Prepper Meet?

I forgot to mention that it would be nice to get confirmation of those who think they might be able to make it. This way we can get a large enough table. You can post on the board or send myself or farmgal a pm.

Re: Spring Ottawa and Area Prepper Meet?

Yes I'm sorry I had my message all typed up and my computer decided it was time for an update and restart. Yes we going to have a meet at the Swiss Chalet at 1899 Cyrville Road, at 11:30 am. Its across from the Costco. We usually try to have a hat or a balloon on the table to identify ourselves to n...

Re: Recommended Alternate Locations in Ottawa Area

The quebec side is indeed an option. I do speak French but i am always amazed at how much English is spoken here. It's true I live closer to the ontario border but I do travel to Montreal on a regular basis and even though there is a higher proportion of French speaking individuals there is a fair a...

Re: Ask a leader food storage questions here

Do you mean on the outside of the mylar bag, or on the inside? Will the mylar bag damage my foodsaver unit? Last time I tried, it melted mylar all over the inside of the foodsaver. :) You need to put it on the inside of the mylar bag. Put part of it into the bag and leave a good 1 or 2 inches stick...

Re: Ask a leader food storage questions here

Mylar is indeed a bit tricky to seal with a foodsaver but it can be done. I cut the top off of a foodsaver bag (about an inch) and place this vertically in the opening of the mylar and then seal. I also combine this with an oxygen absorber for maximum effectiveness.
