Re: Flu epidemic

I think that beyond vaccination (I get it every year), proper hygiene is the most important. Assuming you can't avoid crowds, keep distance from people so that sneeze droplets can't make it to your own face. When in public, avoid touching your face at all cost, wash your hands regularly and use hand...

Re: Adjustable beam lasers

Wayne, What are your thoughts on lasers for handguns in self defense at home? You'd think it could offer some assistance when shooting behind cover/concealment or weak-hand? I've seen Crimson Trace lasers where the advantage being that it requires no extra manipulation and there is no need to change...

Re: On Sale This Week

Lowes has 4250W generators on sale until Jan 10th at 50% off ($300 instead of $600). Not too familiar with the brand but reviews all around seem good. As a backup to a backup plan, I think this is decent deal. https://www.lowes.ca/generators/firman-p03501-gas-powered-4450-watt-portable-generator_g27...

Re: Home defense

Wayne, Thanks for sharing your tips on this subjects. Curious about your point #3. I certainly believe in being a grey man, but having been through a few crisis of the likes of the Quebec Ice Storm, I see there is a lot more complexity to this. For example, after a short while, I might be the only o...

Re: Cast iron wood stove

Not sure whether to revive a post or start a new one... Anyway, I'm looking at getting a wood stove installed in the basement. Some considerations: - would be a back up mean of heating (wood isn't really plentiful in my area) - would need to be elegant looking to keep Mrs HP happy, no lumberjack cam...

Re: Winter Weather 2018

Thanks for the tips farmgal! I was certainly very concerned about the risk of fire and rigged things with fire in mind. I have a mix of chickens and a few seem a lot more cold hardy (small combs and wattles). Mrs HP conceded we would get a few more chickens this springs and I'll get Icelandic or BCM...

Re: Winter Weather 2018

First winter with chickens. For the last 2 days, I've had to keep a small heater running in the coop to keep things from being ridiculously cold. The heated water dish and heat lamp was just not enough to keep things bearable in the -35C weather. Putting vaseline on combs and wattles is a bit of a f...
