Re: Notes from 2 years in Nova Scotia

It's been another year. Counting, it's been 4 years in Inverness County. We continue to expand the orchard while living far away in a big city. In 2017 we spent about 10 weeks on the farm. Continuing my notes and observations, in no particular order, 22) It continues to be delightful and lovely in I...

Re: C5s Promised Final Post- So Long And Thanks for all the Fish

Prepping is insurance. I hope I never need it. Making it from Ontario to my bugout in Nova Scotia would be an amazingly difficult proposition. And when there, it is very hard to grow food. All that said, there will be trouble. How much trouble and when, God only knows. Lets hope, not much. As I say ...

Re: Notes from 2 years in Nova Scotia

It's been another year. So, continued, 11) Three years in, I feel comfortable saying it's possible to set up and manage a fruit farm from 1000+km away. We're in Nova Scotia about 6 weeks total per year. 12) The Jerusalem artichoke experiment failed. Soil too acidic? I have tried a second planting. 1...

Re: Storm Warning -Freezing rain

Lessons? You will NEVER have enough water stored up...no matter how much you have. Drinking, cooking, and dish washing are not the issue...toilet flushing is the problem. It takes 2 X 2 liter bottles of water to flush the toilet...and that's a minimal flush. Larger...um...sums of material, will tak...

Notes from 2 years in Nova Scotia

Background: we own a decent size rural property in Cape Breton but live out of province. Here are observations we gathered, in no particular order. 1) It's delightful and lovely in Inverness county. 2) Even though it's very rural, Cape Breton (and Nova Scotia) are not self sufficient in food product...

Re: 2008...Again...Um...Alert...I guess?...

There will be trouble. When trouble and how much trouble, who knows. We live in the financial crisis 2008-2015 and counting. The Central Banks still have the global economies on life support, with artificially low interest rates and money creation. Of course, every thinking person knows that's a pro...

Hello from Cape Breton

Hi. We live in a large urban centre in Central Canada and also own a secondary home with 20 hectares of land in a farming area of Cape Breton Island. It's far from where we currently live but it'll be our eventual retirement home. Both my wife and I grew up in a rural setting and are four seasons ou...
