Crimes- food? Anything related to this subject

This is not the first time I have been reading about this, my own mother in her quiet little town in central alberta had someone take a crowbar to her door not that long ago and needed to step up her protection. In talking to the police and those around, it was talked about that in almost all the cases, they were either taking the freezers or emptying the freezers.

A news report about a month ago in Sask, reported that both of their large freezers where taken, which was equal to a whole beef, whole pig and 40 plus chickens, and a moose to boot.. the family's years worth of raised and processed meat, gone just like that..

I am sure that at least a few of you have read and seen the stories in the news that folks in B.C. Alberta, Sask and MB have had people come onto the ranches, shoot a cow, do a select custom butcher, they said it was linked to the increase in beef prices..

So when this article crossed my morning news rounds, I have to admit that I was not that surprised to find they took the food, and emptied the freezer, but what I was surprised is that by the owners own words, why would they take the food and leave the TV..

REALLY, they are still taking sellables as well but the answer is pretty clear, when it came down to room, the food had more value to them then the TV did space wise..

I will do a different post on this in more detail but it reminds me of the year that I had a whole row in my garden picked clean, just once mind you.. but still.. I put up a sign that said, if you need this because you are hungry, then take it, but if not, I grow my food to feed my own family and also a smile, you are on camera :)

Food theft has been a real problem in the city that I live in for years. The city had to put up fences & security cameras on the community & victory gardens as a "team" of individuals was going in and taking all the produce.

Add to that the trucks of food that are stolen

The theft of a trailer containing 40,000 lbs. of meat from an Ancaster shipping lot last week is the latest case in a serious, widespread but often unreported organized crime phenomenon — one that, according to industry estimates, costs Canadian companies in the billions of dollars per year.

Someone in Hamilton, Ontario, is sitting on $50,000 worth of illicit melons after a truck full of fruit was stolen on New Year’s Eve.
