My new solar emergency backup system

Postby CanaBalistic » Thu Jul 02, 2015 11:02 pm

Hello everyone!

I want to show off my new mini solar setup. I'm quite proud of it. This is the bare bones of the system. I'm using a automotive battery right now because that's what i had here. When the time comes to expand the system i'll track down some deep cycle batteries. I have on order all the parts and pieces to build an Arduino solar tracker with servo gimbal, i'm just waiting for everything to come in.

I wanted to start small because i rent my place and i dont have much money. This small setup is proof of concept and allows me to learn the basics before going to a big setup. The primary use will be to supply light and a radio should the power go out for a few hours.

10w Polycrystalline Solar Panel $35
20A Charge Controller $9
300 Watt Power Inverter $30
Battery $0

I'll post updates when i get the gimbal together and / or when i track down some larger panels.

During the big storm last month this little guy came in quite handy. Although its only a small inverter, we had a light and radio for 2 nights while out power was out. I could hear a few people running gen sets off in the distance on the next block but that's got to be costly. Also, the gas stations were out of power too, so once they run out of gas... back to the stone age.

I'm actually selling this unit as I've decided to upgrade to a larger system to run the fridge.

If anyone is interested

I have it listed for $150 but would do $120 for any member here.
