Define Prepper please

Post by smor »

Ok so the title says it all. I would like to hear others opinions of what the definition of a prepper truly is. I've seen and heard all kinds of things all over and would like the general consensus here. This should be interesting! :D

well you could open up a can of worms with that question, and clearly it means different things to different people.
since its a blank slate, I will just throw out my definition in point form.

you supply your own electrical power to the degree that meets your needs
you provide your own heat (important in Canada don't you think?)
your secure in water...well, rain, storage, whatever works
you can supplement or meet a large measure of your food needs, garden/hunting/domestic animals, whatever works
You are secure in property (home), to the best measure that meets your needs. Living in a paid for garden shed, beats 5 bedroom 12th floor condo.
you know by name and are welcome in the home of at least two of your neighbours, and they are welcome in yours.
you have extra of the above and plan to share with others in need

That's 7 and if you meet 5 of those I would consider you a type of prepper

Now alternetly,

you have the means to meet your electrical needs through any likely emergency
you can heat a area well enough to get by in any likely emergency
you have enough water to get yourself through any likely emergency
you have enough food to get yourself through any likely emergency
you know one of your neighbours and are at least friendly enough to visit for coffee now and then.
you have extra of the above and plan to share with others in a emergency.

that 6 and if you meet 4 of those I would consider you a prepper.

now with both types that is only the basics...I would say core things..... hit those first, and after you have those prime things taken care of add all the other things you want...

Now...what isn't a prepper, or should I say the opposite

If you have a gun, but cant meet your power needs in a emergency or full time your a survivalist...
If you cant provide heat for yourself through any likely emergency/calamity or full time but you have a gun your a survivalist..and in Canada a dumb one, -40 beats gun every time
if you cant supplement your food needs, from stores, garden, hunting..etc to get yourself through a emergency your a survivalist
or if you can but think you will never share with anyone, as they didn't plan like you....your a survivalist
if you don't know any of your neighbours, never had them over, and they don't ask you over...your a survivalist, and this leads to the next point.
if you have a bugout vehicle, a prime indicator that you are a survivalist as with not knowing your neighbours, a attitude of not sharing, and being unable to meet some of the previously listed things getting away is likely the only thing you can do, and probably wise...your a survivalist
just my thoughts

Give a man a gun, and he can rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he can rob the world.

Good Job Peppercorn. There is absolutely no need for me to drag out the soap box today or break into a rousing chorus of "Macho Macho Man...." I usually add "Survivalist Drag Queen". Does this tactical harness make me look fat? Does my rifle match my shoes? A 1911 is sooo 1980s. Rhodesia called and they want there Fu Manchu Mustache back.....

Technically, tradesman is correct though.

Prepper history lesson. The first ever use of the term was in the Foxfire Book series. Popularity of the term came about as people wanted to distance themselves from the excesses of early survivalism. For about the last 5 years, there is no difference now as anyone that considers themselves a survivalist took over the word....in the same way that libertarians took over the title libertarian. Most libertarianism in other parts of the planet are actually socialist. That should get some hackles raised. LOL.

Ive wanted a new name for prepper for a while but am getting nothing. Personally, I like The B.A.T.. That would be The Bureau of Apocalyptic Tourism. That would make us Batmen :D

I JUST CANT HELP MYSELF!. Did any of the old guys get the "Rhodesia called..." joke. I almost peed myself writing it. I've been wanting to write this little diatribe for a while.

If you had a boonie hat in the 80s...but have never lived in a jungle....you might not be a prepper. You might just be a Survivalist Drag Queen.

If you purchased a shamog since Desert Storm....but have never lived in a desert...you just might not be a prepper. You might just be a Survivalist Drag Queen.

Backwards New York ball cap with Oakleys. Definitely SDQ boner material.

Have you ever thought of camouflaging your vehicle...especially if you live in the Burbs. Definitely a Survivalist Drag Queen

The reason I can say this is because....I might just have a few of these items hidden around the homestead....tucked away in the back of the closet like an ex raver kids wide bottomed pants once the ecstasy wore off. Confession. Yours truly....is a Recovering Survivalist Drag Queen. The difference is... I can make this look HOT. Total BEAR magnet here. Even my lesbian friends think its "The right kind of Butch" :ugeek:

Aviator Glasses, my friends. Nothing says "Drop those things and squeal like a pig" like aviator sunglasses. It is sooo me.

OMG. Im not finished ranting.

How could I possibly have forgotten the Maxpadition Tactical Man Purse. Dead give away that you might be a Survivalist Drag queen.

In fact....anything that has the word "Tactical" or "SHTF" attached to it. The Tactical Multitool. Its not just a Multi tool that does what other tools do and do it badly. Its Tactical and a fashion accessory. Always a give away of being a survivalist drag queen. The SHTF drill. The tactical pencil sharpener. The tactical toe nail trimmer.

Preppers think logistics. Survivalist Drag Queens think Tactics. It reminds me of the 80s ninja fad. Every item had to have " The secret Ninja..." at the front of it and "...of Death" at the end. The Secret Ninja Electric Toothbrush...of Death. Lets mix mediums, shall we. The SHTF Tactical Bug Out Bag...Of Death. Now in CadPad. Available At Walmart.

Speaking of Walmart, You can now get your SHTF Tactical friendship bracelet. Paracord as a fashion accessory. Well, god bless the industrious tiny hands of Chinese children providing us all with Survivalist Drag Queen Fashion Assemblages.

OK...I think I have tired myself out. Rant Over

NoOOO!....Camouflage Face Paint Makeup. Dead Give away. MREs, Goon Lights. Camouflage Tactical underwhear......
...And Don't Tread On Me Flags...Might as well be Rainbows flags.....OK. Im Done Now.....
